The Autozam Clef ended in December 1994. Late in the production run a version with a redesigned front bumper that incorporated a grille, called the Clef Limited-X, was introduced, but it was only offered for a short time and built in very small numbers. The grilleless fascia of the Clef had been more cute than prestigious or sporty, which further harmed its sales. The Clef was the top level sedan at Autozam. The word clef is a musical notation, and Mazda chose it to signify a reference point for other Autozam products.
