By the 1991 model year the 1.6 and 1.8 CVH and 2.0 DOHC petrol models were available with a catalytic converter, which became compulsory at the end of 1992. The non catalysed 1.6 liter cars marked the last use of the venerable Pinto engine in a Ford of Europe passenger car. The Sierra 2000E, a limited edition, was on sale from 1989 to 1991, and the XR4x4 continued to be offered with the 2.9 EFi and 2.0 DOHC EFi engines.
