Japanese manufacture of the Cordia was discontinued in 1990, after eight years on sale. The car had been one of the first Mitsubishi models sold in the United States without Chrysler, and it gave Mitsubishi a coupe with front wheel drive between the Galant and the Starion. It had also been a performance bargain in Australia and New Zealand in the mid 1980s. The Cordia used front-wheel drive and was similar in design to the Mirage, with the exception of its larger size.
