For 1990 the dashboard of the Country Squire received its first major update since 1979 with the addition of a driver side airbag, and the outboard rear seats received three point seatbelts. By 1991 the Country Squire was the slowest selling Ford vehicle in North America, with less than 4,000 produced. In 1990 it remained the counterpart of the LTD Crown Victoria, with simulated woodgrain trim. The Country Squire was the top level Ford station wagon, distinguished by woodgrain bodyside trim.
