In 1990 the Escort based Bantam was replaced by a model derived from the Mazda 323, which was a more modern front drive coupe utility. It was built at the Samcor plant in Silverton, and was sold as a Ford Bantam and as a Mazda Rustler for the South African market. The Bantam was a coupe utility pickup that Ford produced in South Africa for the South African market. It was the small half ton pickup known there as a bakkie, sold beside the Mazda Rustler.
