A host of changes upgraded the Grand Prix for 1989, including for the first time optional anti lock brakes, standard air conditioning and rear shoulder belts, and a new 3.1 liter multi point fuel injected V6 of 140 horsepower replaced the 2.8 liter midway through the year. A new limited edition turbo coupe featured an ASC and McLaren turbocharged version of the 3.1 liter V6 with 205 horsepower, 65 more than the previous year, and only 749 were produced.
