For 1988 Pontiac replaced the LG3 engine with a revised version of the same engine, called the 3800 V6, with sequential port fuel injection producing 165 horsepower and 210 pound feet of torque. Also in 1988 the LE model, previously the top trim level for 1987, became the base trim, and the base model was dropped. The SSE, which featured an extra deep rear valence, a spoiler, lower body cladding and an automatic leveling rear air suspension, was added.
