For 1988 the 3.8 L V6 of the Cougar was given multiport fuel injection, increasing output to 140 horsepower, and the 4.9 L V8 was retuned to 155 horsepower. The analog XR7 dashboard made its return, with the deletion of the boost gauge, and the tachometer was revised for a lower revving V8 engine. The 4 speed AOD transmission was fitted to both the 3.8 L and 4.9 L engines. It was the last year of the sixth generation. The Cougar was a Fox platform luxury sports coupe, the counterpart of the Thunderbird, with a notchback roofline and GS, LS and XR7 trims.
