During 1988 the Escort carried on as the revised Mark IV, offered in Popular, L, LX, GL, Ghia, XR3i and Orion versions, and Ford was preparing the biggest changes to its engine line up for the following model year. Escorts for European markets were still assembled at Halewood near Liverpool and at Saarlouis in West Germany, and sales stayed strong, making the car one of the most common on British roads by the end of the decade.
