For 1988 the Country Squire received its first external updates since 1979, sharing the front fascia update of its sedan counterpart, with new front seats with larger head restraints. It remained the counterpart of the LTD Crown Victoria, in simulated woodgrain trim with eight passenger seating, a Windsor V8, and continued to decline in sales as the Aerostar and then the Ford Explorer took over family towing duties. The Country Squire was the top level Ford station wagon, distinguished by woodgrain bodyside trim.
