Fuel injection replaced the carburetors on the 3.9 liter V6 for 1988, but the rated output remained the same. Power windows and locks were now made optional. The Dakota was the first mid size pickup with an optional V8 engine, and four wheel drive was available only with the V6. The 1988 Dakota was built at Chrysler's Warren Truck Assembly in Michigan, sharing the plant with the full size Dodge D and W series.
