The E28 was still sold in North America as a 1988 model year car after the E34 had been released in Europe in early 1988, and it was the final year for the 528e, 535i and 535is in the American line up. A limited edition E28 also stayed on sale in South Africa until the end of 1988, giving the second generation a long tail. The E28 thus overlapped with the E34 for a time, and the E34's own American launch followed in October 1988.
