The Rover 800 was launched on 10 July 1986, taking the place of the decade old Rover SD1, as an executive car co developed with Honda, a close relative of the Honda and Acura Legend. It was built by Austin Rover, the subsidiary of British Leyland, and was also marketed as the Sterling in the United States. Joint development had begun in 1981 under the codename XX. The car replaced the SD1 in July.
