Honda announced the VFR750F in 1986, after the press first saw it at the 1985 Bol d'Or, as the successor to the VF750F, with 104 hp where the older bike had 83 hp, 20 kg less weight, a lower center of gravity, a wider front tire, a shorter wheelbase, six gear ratios and camshafts driven by gears. The VFR700F, a 700cc tariff buster, was brought in to meet Japan's home market limit of 700cc and was also sold in the USA, and the HRC race kitted VFR750RK raised claimed power from 105 PS to 125 PS. British racer Ron Haslam rode a standard VFR750F to third place in 1986 in a Transatlantic Challenge race at Donington Park that was soaked by rain.
