The Series III reached the end of its production in 1985, after 440,000 had been built since 1971, and the Stage 1 V8 also ended that year after a run that began in 1979. It was the last Series Land Rover. The line of Land Rovers descending directly from the 1948 original continued as the Defender, and a Series III Land Rover stayed in military service in New Zealand until the Stage 1 V8s were retired in 2006.
