In 1985 a group of Ford assembly employees took an EXP off the line and upgraded it with parts from the updated 1985 and a half Escort. This one off prototype was presented to Ford CEO Donald Petersen, who approved it for production as a 1985 and a half model. The EXP Luxury Coupe was introduced then, with a 1.9 L CVH with a two barrel carburetor making 90 horsepower. The 1985 cars switched to a two spoke steering wheel.
