For 1984 the XR7 made its return after a year long hiatus, as the counterpart of the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, fitted with a turbocharged 2.3 L engine shared with the Mustang SVO, a performance oriented suspension and full analog instrumentation. The hood ornament was replaced by a flat hood emblem and the steering column was redesigned, returning horn control to the steering wheel. The turbo produced 145 horsepower with an automatic.
