The Cordia went on sale in 1982 as a compact hatchback coupe from Mitsubishi, fitted between the Starion, the Galant and the Lancer in the range. It had front wheel drive, a design similar to the Mirage but bigger, and a deeper fascia that gave the car a cockpit feel. It could be had with an optional liquid crystal electronic instrument cluster. The Cordia XP was the model sold at the Japanese Car Plaza retail chain, while the Cordia XG was sold at the Galant Shop chain.
