Four wheel drive was added in 1981, featuring torsion bar suspension up front. In late 1981 the 2.0 liter with five speed manual was made optional for the two wheel drive one tonne suspension models. The 4WD system incorporated an extra lever alongside the main four speed shifter, with three positions, two wheel drive in high range, four wheel drive in high range and four wheel drive in low range. In Japan, where it has only been sold intermittently and in small numbers, it was originally known as the Mitsubishi Forte and from 1991 as the Strada.
