In November 1981 the SB series was introduced in Australia, now fitted with radial ply tires on larger diameter wheels, increasing the payload capacity from 925 to 1,000 kilograms. The following month Mitsubishi introduced the high roofed luxury Deluxe trim, fitted with an electric sunroof and cloth upholstery. The Delica was originally based on a cabover van and pickup truck introduced in 1967, also called the Delica.
