For 1981 the ES and Ghia trims of the Zephyr were both replaced by GS trim, the equivalent of Futura on non coupe Fairmonts, while the Mercury Bobcat gave way to the Lynx and the Monarch to the Cougar below and above it. In line with other Mercury station wagons the line was offered with a Villager option package with simulated woodgrain trim. At the beginning of the 1980s the Zephyr was gradually phased out. It was the third vehicle to use the nameplate within Ford Motor Company.
