The 1980 El Camino started out the 1980s with few changes, though engine choices were shuffled a little: the base V6 displaced 229 cubic inches, up from 200 the year before, and the 350 with 170 horsepower offered in 1979 was dropped. The 1980 car was the third year of the fifth generation that began with the trimmer body of 1978, sold alongside its GMC twin, the Caballero. The Conquista trim consisted mainly of a special paint treatment, and the Super Sport remained the sports model.
