British Leyland entered the small hatchback market with its Metro, which was launched in October 1980, a market pioneered during the 1970s by the Renault 5 and Volkswagen Polo. After 1980 the Allegro failed to feature in the top 10 best selling new cars in Britain, barely a decade since its predecessor had been Britain's most popular new car. The Triumph Acclaim of 1981 would also act as a substitute for the Allegro.
