In 1979 the Zephyr was positioned between the Bobcat and the Monarch in the Mercury line, offered as sedans, a station wagon and the Z-7 coupe on the Ford Fox platform shared with the Fairmont. In line with other Mercury station wagons the model line was offered with a Villager option package including simulated woodgrain trim. The Zephyr carried the 2.3 litre inline four of the Fairmont, which was paired with a 4 speed manual from 1979.
