The 1978 Lincoln Versailles was powered by a V8 as the sole choice, shared with the Monarch it was based on, initially the 351 cubic inch V8, phased out in favor of the 302 cubic inch V8, with a three speed C4 automatic as the only transmission. It used a Ford 9 inch rear differential with rear disc brakes, replacing the drums of the Granada and Monarch. Bodywork received the first clear coat paint on a regular production vehicle.
