A new, trimmer El Camino was unveiled in 1978, adopting the new, more sharp edged Malibu styling and a one inch longer wheelbase of 117.1 inches, with front sheet metal and doors shared with the Malibu and the rear bumper shared with the Malibu station wagon. Its trims were the base model, the Conquista and the Super Sport, and Chevrolet offered a Black Knight model that ended after only 1,200 examples because of legal problems over use of the name. The GMC twin was renamed Caballero in 1978.
