In February 1975 the Lancer was complemented by a hatchback called the Lancer Celeste, succeeding the Galant FTO, which was also called the Mitsubishi Celeste in New Zealand or the Colt Celeste in some other markets. The A70 sedans, hardtop and wagon went on in their third year, powered by 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines, and the Lancer had entered its rally career with the 1600 GSR. The Lancer filled the gap between the Minica kei car and the larger Galant.
