The 1974 Challenger was the last of the first generation. The 340 V8 was replaced by a 360 rated at 245 horsepower, but the pony car market had collapsed and production stopped in late April 1974, partway through the model year. After that the name was unused until Dodge applied it to an imported Mitsubishi coupe for 1978. The decline of the pony car market and rising insurance premiums for performance cars were the reasons for the end of the E body Challenger after only five model years.
