A larger 1.7 liter engine of 115 PS arrived for the top GS model in January 1973, and in March the cleaner MCA-II version of the 1.6 liter arrived, with two months of first generation production left. The second generation Galant was introduced on 24 May 1973 in Japan, on sale from 1 June, and was more widely exported as Mitsubishi's ambitions grew. The Galant competed with the Toyota Corona, Nissan Bluebird, Honda Accord and Mazda Capella.
