Every 1973 Chevrolet had a larger shock absorbing front bumper to meet the federal 5 mile per hour impact requirement, and steering wheels and instrument panels were color keyed to the interior. A thousand Impalas were built with an Air Cushion Restraint System with driver and passenger air bags, using an Oldsmobile instrument panel. The 350 two barrel V8 became the standard engine from 1973 to 1976, and Powerglide remained optionally available for six cylinder cars until the 1973 models.
