For 1972 the grille of the Marquis shifted to an egg crate design with a similar panel between the taillamps. In line with federal mandates the Marquis adopted seatbelt warning buzzers, and the model line introduced a power sunroof option for the first time, requiring the selection of a vinyl roof. During the 1972 model year the Marquis received the 460 from Lincoln as an option. It was the flagship Mercury, with the Brougham as the highest trim.
