The Mazda Chantez, chassis code KMAA, was introduced in July 1972 as a two door kei car with a longer wheelbase of 2,200 mm than most of its competitors and the powerful two stroke AA engine also used in the Porter, with 35 PS and a top speed of 115 km/h. The Chantez EV concept was unveiled at the 1972 Tokyo Motor Show as part of a government funded scheme. The name chantez is second-person plural present indicative of chanter, which in French means to sing.
