The Continental Mark IV went on sale for 1972, aligned with a Thunderbird redesign, and grew in size over the Mark III. For 1972 its rated output fell to 212 horsepower SAE net, as the industry switched to reporting net horsepower. The Mark IV introduced a rear side window called an opera window, an almost universally specified option in 1972 that became standard the following year and remained through the Mark VI. Mark series vehicles were produced alongside Lincolns by Wixom Assembly at Wixom, Michigan.
