The 1972 model year engine output ratings dropped to meet stricter emissions standards and rising gas prices, and Chryslers received a new split grille. It was the last year for the loop style front bumpers on Chryslers, which had defined the fuselage cars since 1969. The delayed facelift finally arrived this year, and the New Yorker continued as the flagship of the regular Chrysler line, with the Imperial above it on its own platform.
