In 1972 the New Class four door sedans were replaced by the larger E12 5 Series, ending the line of sedans and coupes that BMW had produced since 1962. The 2000 tii of 1969, with fuel injection, had been the final New Class sedan. The New Class had ensured BMW's solvency after the financial crisis of the 1950s, and it was succeeded in the coupe range by the six cylinder E9. The New Class had run for ten years.
