The Austin 3-Litre was discontinued completely in May 1971, after fewer than 10,000 had been produced. It suffered from a perception that it was merely an enlarged Morris Landcrab, nicknamed the Land-lobster, with which it shared its doors. It was not directly replaced, and ultimately the Rover SD1 and the Jaguar XJ fulfilled the 3-Litre's role in the portfolio of British Leyland. The car sold poorly throughout its life.
