The Mazda brand entered the United States market in 1970 with just the small R100, and expanded to a full line in 1971 including the full size 1800. The Mazda 1800 imports into the US in 1970 were 1,058 sedans and 937 wagons. The Luce Mark I was sold in Australia and most other export markets as the Mazda 1500 and Mazda 1800. The Luce was widely exported as the Mazda 929 from 1973 to 1991, as Mazda's largest sedan. The name Luce was taken from the Italian word for light.
