At the start of 1970 continental production moved to a new plant on the edge of Saarlouis, West Germany, and the Escort now faced the Hillman Avenger as well as the Vauxhall Viva. Its biggest sporting moment came in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, which Hannu Mikkola and Gunnar Palm won, and in November Ford brought out the Mexico special edition to mark it, building 10,352 on strengthened shells. Ford Australia also began to build the Mark I that year.
