For 1970 the Malibu was at first the only series of Chevelle offered apart from the SS-396 and the new SS-454, because the low line 300 and 300 Deluxe models were discontinued for the American market, though the 300 continued in Canada until 1972. That also removed the two door pillared coupes from the Chevelle line. In the middle of the 1970 model year the Malibu was rejoined by lower line models simply called the base Chevelle in four door sedans and two door hardtops.
