Introduced in September 1963, the BMW 1800 was the second member of the New Class family. The New Class sedans ensured BMW's solvency after the company's financial crisis of the 1950s, and established the identity of BMW automobiles as luxury sports sedans. In 1963 the 1500 was still the only other New Class model, in its first full year of regular production. The 1500 had entered production in October 1962.
