The 1962 Mercury S-55 was introduced alongside the Mercury Monterey and, as with the Ford Galaxie 500XL, was available in two door hardtop and convertible body styles, with bucket seats, a center console and a floor mounted shifter. It was powered by the two largest V8s of the Monterey, a 390 cubic inch engine rated at 300 or 330 horsepower or a 406 cubic inch version at 385 or 405 horsepower. The hardtop was listed at 3,488 dollars and 2,772 were sold.
