In 1962 the Series IIA Forward Control was launched, built on the 109-inch chassis with the 2.25-litre petrol engine but with the cab moved over the engine to leave more room for load. Export versions were the first Land Rovers to receive the 2.6-litre petrol engine. It could carry 1.5 long tons, though it was rather underpowered for that and most had a hard working life. Fewer than 2,500 were made and most carried a utility body. Santana was by now responsible for promoting Land Rover in Latin America and Africa.
