The 3200 CS was introduced at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the BMW 1500. While the 1500 stood for a completely new direction at BMW, the 3200 CS was built on the chassis of a car that had been shown at the same show ten years before. It was designed by Bertone, and it was the first BMW to carry the Hofmeister kink, which later became a trademark of the company. The 1500 was the first car of the New Class.
