The coupe and saloon versions of the 700 were shown at the 1959 Frankfurt Motor Show, and the coupe went into production in August 1959 with the saloon following that December. It was the first BMW with a monocoque structure. In the same month as the saloon appeared, shareholders blocked a proposal by BMW's supervisory board to sell the company to Daimler-Benz, and the 700 became the car that helped to save it.
