Production of the BMW 503 began in May 1956, the two door 2+2 gran turismo in coupe and cabriolet body styles that BMW developed alongside the 507 roadster. In November 1954 BMW had contracted Goertz to consider the existing design of the 503 and to design the 507. The 503 and 507 would cost about twice their projected price and did not recover their development costs. The Cabriolet was one of 139 built.
