The 1955 Ford was an automobile that Ford produced in the United States for the 1955 model year and, in revised form, for 1956, before a new design arrived in 1957. It gained a new body to keep up with surging Chevrolet and Plymouth, though underneath it remained similar to the 1952 Ford. The Mileage Maker six-cylinder was enlarged to 223 cubic inches and 120 horsepower, and the Y-block V8 was offered in two sizes. The new Fairlane replaced the Crestline as the top trim, joined by the Mainline and Customline, and the Crown Victoria carried a chrome basket handle over its hardtop roof. Station wagons became a separate series for the first time. For 1956 Ford adopted a 12-volt electrical system.
