The brakes on the early P4 cars were operated by a hybrid hydro mechanical system but became fully hydraulic in 1950. The earlier cars used a Rover engine from the 1948 Rover 75, and a four speed manual transmission with a column mounted gear change at first, with synchromesh only on third and top gears. The P4 was driven by royalty including Grace Kelly and King Hussein of Jordan. It was built at the Rover Company.
