The Mercury Eight was the debut model of the Mercury division in 1939, produced with its own body that adapted a Ford style. The two door sedan was listed at 946 dollars, several hundred more than the 1937 Ford V8 and several hundred less than the Lincoln Zephyr, and about the same as upper range Oldsmobile and Dodge models. The series name was 99A, though sales literature referred to the Mercury Eight from the start. It was positioned between the Ford V8 and the Lincoln Zephyr.
