The New Yorker name debuted in 1939, after a trim level called the New York Special had first appeared in 1938 as a sub series of the Imperial. For 1939 it was expanded with two more coupe versions and a two door sedan, and it received a larger, more powerful engine from the Imperial, taking the New Yorker name and dropping the Special tag. Prices ran from 1,223 dollars for the two passenger coupe to 1,298 dollars for the four door sedan.
