The 3/15 DA-4 replaced the DA-2 in mid February 1931, and was the first BMW automobile with independent front suspension. The Wartburg was discontinued in 1931, after 150 had been sold. Josef Ganz, the journalist and engineer who had criticized the 3/15 DA-4's suspension system in the magazine Motor Kritik, was contracted in July 1931 as a consultant in the design of the 3/20. The DA-4 was the first BMW with independent front suspension.
